Mark performed the lead fire safety engineer role in each of these new schools involving major redevelopment or construction of new facilities in each school ground to accommodate rising demand for school places in Sydney, catering for up to 1000 students in some cases. Mark worked closely with the Government Architects Office, certifying authorities and builders in each project in developing fire engineering solutions that allowed the architectural design and school operational requirements to be as free flowing as possible with access balconies, courtyards and terraces linking various section and levels of the school facilities. As part of this role Mark carried out extensive performance based assessments on rationalising construction materials, fire resistance levels, egress arrangements and smoke hazard management measures.
